Postnatal Care

After the birth I will normally attend on a daily basis to ensure both mother and baby are well. Where necessary the assistance of other professionals such as lactation consultants or postnatal home midwifery support can be recommended or arranged.

My care extends to the six week postnatal visit but I feel that my care extends beyond this where issues arise from the pregnancy or birth that go beyond this time. Under these circumstances I will arrange further appointments or support.

Usually a postnatal visit will be made for about six weeks after the birth. Any problems that arise earlier should be brought to my attention (eg heavy bleeding or pain). Additional visits or tests may be required. At the postnatal visit I will assess physical and psychological recovery as well as provide contraceptive advice if required. Any other matters can be addressed including preparation for a future pregnancy (vaccinations, genetic testing etc).
